Identification of Artificial Levees in the Contiguous United States

چکیده
Abstract Artificial levees are anthropogenic structures designed to hydrologically disconnect rivers from floodplains. The extent of artificial in the contiguous United States (CONUS) is unknown. To better estimate distribution levees, we tested several different geomorphic, land cover, and spatial variables developed National Elevation Dataset, Land Cover database, Hydrology Dataset HR Plus. We used known levee locations Levee Database as training data. machine learning general logistic models’ ability detect a 100‐year hydrogeomorphic floodplain seven geographically diverse 8‐digit HUC basins. Random forest models outperformed other predicting location using representing geomorphic attributes, distance streams ranging size between stream order one through six. demonstrate our approach unknown conducted leave‐one‐out cross‐validation lower Mississippi Basin approximately 1,100 levees. This detected constituting 94% total length basin. Scaling up CONUS, applied high performing (overall accuracy 97%) random model cover variables. 182,213 km potential mostly along 2–6 Missouri River Basins, indicating that national database contains 20.4% length. Potential those documented modify 2% States.

Health System Reform in the United States
In 2010, the United States adopted its first-ever comprehensive set of health system reforms in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Implementation of the law, though politically contentious and controversial, has now reached a stage where reversal of most elements of the law is no longer feasible. The controversial portions of the law that expand affordable health insurance coverage to most U.S. cit...
متن کاملThe Frequency of Large Hail over the Contiguous United States
One of Stan Changnon’s abiding interests is the frequency and pattern of large hail occurrence. Stan started publishing papers in AMS journals on the occurrence of large hail in 1966. After that initial effort, Stan has published 27 papers in AMS journals alone. When other journals, such as those of the AGU, Conference Preprints, and Technical Reports are added, Stan has an amazing record of do...
متن کاملLightning fatality risk map of the contiguous United States
A new method to calculate lightning fatality risk is presented in order to develop a way to identify the lightning risk in areas where lightning fatality data are not available. This new method uses GIS software to multiply lightning flash density and population density on a grid and display the results on a map. A comparison to the known lightning fatality data was done to verify the method. T...
متن کاملVariability of wildland fire emissions across the contiguous United States
This study analyzes spatial and temporal variability of emissions from wildland fires across the contiguous US. The emissions are estimates based on a recently constructed dataset of historical fire records collected by multiple US governlnental agencies. Both wildfire and prescribed fires have the highest emissions over the Pacific coastal states. Prescribed fire emissions are also found to be...
متن کاملComplex Network Analysis of the Contiguous United States Graph
We model the contiguous states (48 states and the District of Columbia) of the United States (US) as an undirected network graph with each state represented as a node and there is an edge between two nodes if the corresponding two states share a common border. We determine a ranking of the states in the US with respect to a suite of node-level metrics: the centrality metrics (degree, eigenvecto...
